THE BIGGEST QUESTIONS OF LIFE

Do you ever stop and think about life? Have you ever wondered what it is all about? Someone once summed life up as follows, 'Our births were a fluke, our lives are a farce and at death we become mere fertilizer.' Is that true? Are we really no more than animals that live and die, and that's the end? Do our lives honestly mean so little?

Many turn to philosophy or religion to find the answers to life's big questions. But the most reliable place to find the true answers is in the Bible. This is because the Bible is God's word. It is the book that God has given us to teach us what He is like and how we can know Him personally. It should amaze us, that the living God has chosen to communicate with us at all, but He graciously has! The Bible consistently out sells ever other book and has been translated into numerous languages. It contains hundreds of specific prophecies that have all come true and it has been backed up by archaeology and secular history again and again. It's surely about time we took the Bible seriously! Please consider just briefly what it says about the 3 biggest questions of life.

WHERE DID I COME FROM?
Many believe that we are just a chance collection of atoms formed by random events and natural selection from lower life forms. However, this is a belief that robs life of its meaning and fulfilment; and ultimately it leads to hopelessness and despair.

As we look around us we see evidence for design everywhere, and design demands a designer. It is not good enough for people like Richard Dawkins to say the world looks like it was designed, but it just wasn't. Of course mankind in his naturally rebellious state would prefer there not to be a God. After all, if He does exist then we are accountable to Him and let's face it, no one likes to be accountable to others. This is the heart of the issue for most atheists; they cannot prove there is no God. Far from it! They simply don't want there to be a God. But wishful thinking does change anything.

The Bible tells us that Man is not merely a highly developed animal, but that he was created by a special act of God. 'You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made' (Psalm 139:13,14). Human beings have many faculties and abilities which even the most advanced animal does not have. God made us in His image. We have something of the stamp of the Creator upon us. Even though that stamp has been marred by our sin, there is still something of it there.

God is the One who has given each of us life. He has also given us a multitude of other good things as well, 'He gives to all life, and breath and all things' (Acts 17:25). Oh that we would recognize that every good gift if from above.

WHY AM I HERE?
We might live by the adage that we are here to get as much for ourselves while we can. However, the Bible tells us that we were made for a purpose far higher and nobler than that. We were created to know and love God. 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart... This is the first and great commandment' (Matthew 22: 37, 38).

Tragically, because we have rebelled against God and disobeyed His laws we are unable to fulfil the purpose for which God made us. In fact we have lost contact with God - 'All we like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned every one to his own way' (Isaiah 53:6). We think we can manage without God, yet deep within each of us we sense there is more to life than trying to obtain satisfaction with just material things. If we are honest we have to admit that without God life is empty and meaningless. But it need not stay like that!

God came up with a way for sinners like us to be reunited with Him. Because God is just and holy He couldn't ignore the fact that we have broken His laws. Even our own sense of justice demands that wrongdoing should be punished. A penalty has to be paid, 'the wages of sin is death' (Romans 6:23). But God loves us so much that He sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to save us from the penalty that our sins deserve.

When Jesus died on the cross at Calvary He took the punishment for our sins. He died so that we might be forgiven and have our relationship with God restored. 'But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us' (Romans 5:8).

WHERE AM I GOING?
The Bible tells us that, 'it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment' (Hebrews 9:27). We will not be endlessly recycled as reincarnation teaches. We have one shot at this thing we call life and then we must face our Maker! 'And what will be the result of that?' you may ask. Shall we just hope for the best??

No, something very definite must be done. You need to own up to and then turn away from your sins and trust in the Lord Jesus as your personal Saviour. If you do that you, you can be sure of heaven. 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved' (Acts 16:31). Jesus said, "He who believes in Me has everlasting life" (John 6:47).

However, the Bible also warns very clearly that if you reject God's way of salvation you will be shut out from His presence forever and ever. This is an awful thought but it is true. The Lord Jesus said that those who did not believe on Him would, 'go away into everlasting punishment' (Matthew 25:46).

So what about you? These questions really are so important. Let's thank God He has given us answers and let us respond with urgency to His free offer of salvation. Don't leave it too late.
